Mitchell County Schools CTE teachers recently had the opportunity to visit some of the most exciting industries in NC on their spring CTE Industry Tour. The group traveled to Charlotte to visit the Quail Hollow Club, Wells Fargo, and JR Motorsports. This semi-annual event allows CTE teachers to spend time touring businesses and industries to connect with employers, learning what jobs are available and how to best prepare the students in Mitchell County for the jobs available upon graduation. Educators walked away with a better understanding of jobs within the Hospitality and Tourism, Sports marketing, Event Management, Finance and Banking and Sport Racing Industries. Having teachers and students take industry tours is an integral part of CTE, and the teachers returned not only with knowledge related to their content area but also with professional contacts offering opportunities for students to do job shadowing and tours in the future. All of the CTE teachers in attendance learned firsthand about what skills an employer is looking for and the steps after high school for students to take to pursue a variety of careers, which was an invaluable experience.

Mitchell High FCCLA and Child Development students volunteered on Saturday morning, April 13th, to help with Child Fest hosted at Mitchell High School. These students helped with the train rides, teddy bear clinic, raffle, face painting, magic show, and various other activities presented by the BRPC. The Child Fest is a wonderful community service event that is attended by hundreds of children in our area and provides information and resources for families. Mitchell High FCCLA and Child Development courses focus on the importance of the family and positive relationships in the family unit, so this event was a great opportunity for these students to practice what they've learned in CTE classes!

Students enrolled in Mitchell High School’s Health Science Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes have been working hard to earn several certifications. After learning the curriculum pertaining to emergency response, Health Science 1 students were able to get hands-on experience as they completed the First-Aid certification course. To become certified, students had to successfully call 911 operators and complete scenarios for CPR, choking, evacuation methods, bleeding control, and stroke. The course was led by Jimmy English, instructor for American Heart Association. In addition, Health Science 2 Honors students completed a CPR certification course, led by Jimmy English, which is an extension on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems taught in the class curriculum. In this course, students completed mock scenarios calling 911 and performing adult, child, and infant CPR and Heimlich. Health Science 2 students then used these newly developed skills to complete a Stop the Bleed Certification course taught by health science teacher Katy Grindstaff. During the course students learned how to apply tourniquets and pack wounds that are considered life-threatening without quick intervention. Students also had to complete a mock scenario where they treated a mass casualty situation involving several victims and wounds. Mitchell High Health Science would like to offer a sincere gratitude of appreciation to Jimmy English for volunteering his time and knowledge to offer these certification courses for our students.

Mitchell High School Trailblazers Outdoor Club took a fishing trip to the NC Coast during Spring Break. The new MHS Trailblazers Outdoor Club is sponsored by Mr. Chad Huggins and Mr. Mike Fox, and the trip was made possible by a $10,000 grant received through the NC Youth Outdoor Engagement Commission. The club at Mitchell now consists of 77 members, with a total of 23 members and 4 chaperones attending the fishing trip. The club made the trip to the coast and spent their time shopping, eating (a lot), spending time on the beach, and going on a 6-hour charter fishing trip. The group fished on a charter through the Calabash Fishing Fleet aboard the Cyclone. Everyone had a fantastic trip and enjoyed the opportunity to fish on the charter boat.
