Mission Statement
The mission of Mitchell High School is to provide each student with a diverse education in a safe, supportive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning. The Mitchell High School staff joins the parents and community to assist students in developing skills to become independent and self-sufficient adults who will succeed and contribute in a global community.
Mitchell High School is located in the northern mountains of Western North Carolina. It is a comprehensive high school serving approximately 500 students, grades nine through twelve. Mitchell High is situated in the center of Mitchell County, population approximately 15,000, between the towns of Spruce Pine and Bakersville.
More than 108 courses in 11 departments are offered, along with honors courses in English, math, science, social studies, Spanish, and CTE courses. Science, and Advanced Placement courses in English, Calculus, Spanish, Environmental Science, and United States History. Mitchell High is on a block schedule of four classes per day for 90 minutes each. Students have the potential to complete eight credits per year. The school year is divided into two semesters with two nine-week grading periods each.
Mitchell High School is accredited by both the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction and Southern Association of Schools.
